Akihito was born to a relationship between a Spirit World Warrior and a powerful Youmu. His mother is the only one we have any information about at this time. Yayoi Kanbara is a talented Spirit World Warrior who randomly sends extremely embarrassing postcards of her dressed up in cosplay. She doesn't seem to visit very often as Akihito lives alone and they seem to argue a lot when they are around each other.
To be honest, if I were to describe Akihito's history it would be "Alone". He's a rare species of half-youmu/half-human and people aren't quite sure why he's immortal. It is believed that it probably has a lot to do with the Kyoukai no Kanata that resides within him though. The Kyoukai no Kanata is the most powerful youmu and is the manifestation of humanities resentments over time. This youmu had apparently decided to live within him allowing Akihito immortality. This immortality and the fact that he is something different and his abilities and powers remain unknown breeds fear in others.
He lives in the town he does primarily for the purpose of the Nase family to watch over and protect others from him. The Nase siblings interact with him out of necessity and not actual friendship--to monitor him and ensure the safety of others. Because of their close vicinity, the appearance of friendship might be something outsiders see but the reality of it is that they don't trust him. Rightfully so too as Hiro'omi Nase was almost killed by him when Akihito's youmu side took over prior to the start of the series.
The information we have been provided up to this point is quite minimal but it's obvious he's gone through life with little outside support. He tends to go along with others plans for him to keep peace and doesn't struggle, argue or try to influence others. He is more the type to allow things to happen to him than to attempt to change the world.
Personality:
I think Akihito himself sums it up fairly well in the first chapter of the light novel. I am sure about one thing, though: I have a bad habit of sticking my nose where it doesn't belong. It isn't altruism that motivates me to behave that way. Au contraire; by making myself indispensable to others, I preserve my sense of self. And that's a sense I very much lack, being neither a human nor a youmu - indeed, being no-one at all. When other people feel that they need me, I feel a sense of salvation. Even I can prove useful to them? That thought alone is enough to make me feel like my life has meaning
In essence, everything you see with Akihito is a carefully designed image he's created for himself. His background and existence being one that leaves people on their toes and constantly observing him has gave way to a personality that is carefully crafted from head to toe. When you look at him, you will not get the impression that he's dangerous or a threat. He wears sweater vests, he smiles, he oozes normalcy, friendliness and kindness out of his very pores. How much of this is an act and how much is really the real him, we'll never know since they are so blended by this point.
The series opens with Akihito observing what he believes to be a suicide attempt by Mirai. Against his better judgment, Akihito rushes up the stairs to attempt to save her--only to find himself stabbed in the chest with a sword of her blood as a result. Where most people would be shocked, upset or angry at this--Akihito simply gives Mirai an awkward smile and asks her to remove it.
Sure, he can't die from something like that so what would he have to get angry about? What's so strange about this kindness he has? Well time passes and Mirai continues to seek him out to attempts to kill him. This entire time Akihito is attempting to befriend her. Never getting more than annoyed at her antics and we learn that even if he's immortal--getting stabbed really does hurt him. He never gets upset with her, in fact he tends to worry about her more than not. Making sure she's eating enough and taking care of herself--even feeding her himself if he feels she's not doing well.
He very seldom gets upset about things, taking a laid back approach to life. He's extremely quick witted and acts as comic relief in many situations in order to defuse tension between others. It's obvious he doesn't like being disliked or untrusted by others and works hard to overcome this especially with those who do show a lack of trust toward him such as the Nase siblings.
Because of this he tends to think more about others than himself. He's extremely self-sacrificing and the type that would throw himself on the blade for an enemy to earn their trust. Especially because he genuinely believes people have a reason to distrust him because of his uncontrollable powers and the damage it can cause. He honestly doesn't blame anyone for their distrust of him, but works hard to make up for it when he is given the opportunity by trying to be useful. So even if you tried to kill him one minute, he might ask you to join a club or to dinner the next.
But if you were to ask Akihito what sort of person he is--he would tell you he's just a pervert with a glasses fetish. He's not afraid to admit to his weakness, carrying around spare glasses and constantly talking about it to anyone who will listen--whether they wish to hear it or not. He just loves glasses and those who wear them.
Abilities/Powers:
-Immortality via extreme regenerative abilities
The issue with Akihito is that even if he has powers, he's not the type to try to figure out what they are. The truth is he could be extremely powerful but since he's not really one to test his limits or act in any way; he might not have any idea of what he's capable.
Since he can be injured, if the wound is extreme it will sometimes sink his human side and bring out his uncontrollable youmu side. His youmu side is extremely powerful, doesn't exactly react to others, has no conscious ability to control itself or self-awareness, is capable of destroying barriers, throws extremely powerful fireballs and can cause the destruction of everything in a large radius around him--people included.
